Ohavi Zedek L'Dor V'Dor
It has been almost 140 years—roughly six generations—since our founders established Ohavi Zedek, “Lovers of Justice,” in 1885. Fleeing persecution and pogroms, they brought their Eastern European shtetl culture and traditions to Burlington’s Old North End. Their determination and resilience laid the groundwork for a proud and flourishing Jewish community that continues today.
In 1952 a dynamic young Rabbi, Max Wall, guided this congregation to a magnificent, modern Jewish community center on North Prospect Street. This property, in a neighborhood that once restricted Jews and African Americans, became a beacon of inclusivity, community, and progress. Rabbi Wall’s leadership transformed Ohavi Zedek, creating a building designed to foster religious gender equality, Jewish education, and social celebration.
